The body digests food and transforms nutrients into blood, structure into function, health and disease. Building nutrients, foods: protein, fat, meat, eggs, chicken, cheese, beans, etc. in varying degrees, build, thicken, fuel and heat. Cleansing nutrients, foods (water, sugar, minerals, fruit, vegetables and grains) reduce, cleanse, cool and moisten. The quality and quantity of blood is also influenced by the five major organ systems (TCM): 1. spleen- pancreas and stomach (digestion), 2. liver (purification, digestion), and gall bladder, 3. heart (circulation) and small intestine, 4. kidneys (jing, purification) and urinary bladder, and 5. lungs (respiration, purification) and large intestine.
Too many building foods (via high protein, high fat diets) tends to thicken the blood (high cholesterol, plaque, clots, tumors), while too little (via long-term low protein, low fat diets) and or too many cleansing foods, drinks, tends to thin the blood (deficient blood). Thin blood or reduced circulation (via high cholesterol, plaque, atherosclerosis, etc.) dry, weaken, inflame, numb, etc. the body, especially extremities (head, arms and legs).
All blood passes through the liver. The liver, stores, cleanses (removes, filters excess protein, fat, cholesterol impurities, etc.) and releases the blood. High protein, high fat diets in the extreme tend to clog, thicken and weaken the liver. Less cholesterol, fat are removed, more stays in the blood (high cholesterol), arteries (plaque, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis) stagnating and reducing its flow, while increasing pressure. Increased clotting also tends to occur (thrombosis) as blood clotting factors are protein based. Overeating, late dinners, alcohol and tobacco also clog and weaken the liver.
Too many fruits, vegetables, juices and cold drinks tend to dilute and weaken digestion, acid and enzymes, reducing nutrient absorption, thinning and weakening the blood. Thin blood, in the extreme, thins, weakens memory (loss), skin (cracked, bleeding), hair (loss), nails, bones (cracked), etc.
Protein and fat, especially animal are more difficult to digest, requiring greater digestive energy (acid, enzymes, etc.) and time, and are best eaten at the beginning of the meal, day, breakfast and lunch as digestion and absorption are stronger, greater during the day and weaker, lesser at night. If you eat it at night, after age thirty, you will most likely wear it in the morning, in your intestines, blood, arteries, liver, thighs, etc.
The middle diet meal plan (1/3 protein and fat, 1/3 grain, 1/3 vegetables (3- 5, cooked, raw), fruit (1), spices, soup and or tea) adjusted accordingly is recommended.
The spleen controls digestion Digestion transforms food, nutrients into blood, and then transformed, reassembled into all structure and function. Weak digestion decreases nutrient absorption, blood, structure and function (energy, chi) while increasing waste product, bloating, gas, dampness, etc. Whatever food and fluids not digested becomes waste.
Digestion transforms food, nutrients into blood. There are only two kinds of nutrients, foods: building (hot) and cleansing (cold). Building, nutrients, foods, in varying degrees, build, thicken fuel and heat all structure and function. Cleansing foods, nutrients, in varying degrees, reduce cleanse, cool, moisten and sink. Too little building and or too many cold, cleansing foods, drinks (salads, tropical fruit, juices, smoothies, cold drinks etc.), in the extreme, weaken and or dilute digestion, acids, enzymes, reducing nutrient absorption, blood (as do hemorrhage, drugs and surgery),
Building foods: High protein, high fat (cholesterol) red meat, pork, wild game, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, hard cheese Low protein, low fat Soft cheese, milk, yogurt, beans, nuts, seeds and grains (little or no fat)
Long-term low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate diets, in the extreme, weaken, cool and or dilute digestion, reducing nutrient absorption, thinning the blood, which in turn, thins, dries and weakens everything else (see table below). Blood, protein and fat deficiency tends to attack women more so than men, due to menstruation and the tendency to eat low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate diets. Blood deficiency and stagnant blood (overbuilt) tends to attack the entire body, all five major organ systems.
Under built, deficient blood
Dietary tendencies Cold lacto vegetarian, vegan, raw foods, fruitarian, low protein, low fat, milk (any kind), yogurt, soft cheese, beans, nuts, high carbohydrate, bread, pasta, cereals, salads, raw vegetables, fruit, especially tropical, juices, shakes, smoothies, soda, cold drinks, in the extreme, tend to cause Thin, cold, weak Deficient yang, vata Anemia, low cholesterol, pallor, fatigue, cold, dizziness, shaking, thin, dried or cracked, skin, hair, nails; amenorrhea, infertility, miscarriage, low blood pressure, memory loss, senility, hysteria, depression and or fear
Blood, protein and fat deficiency symptoms, mild to severe
1. Fatigue You cannot think, much less walk, when your blood, protein and fat supply is low. Blood, protein and fat, build and fuel all function. The muscles, bones, lungs, brain, etc. become weak, tired, when their substance and fuel, blood, protein and fat, decline.
2. Thin and or cracked hair, skin (eczema), nails, muscles, etc. Blood builds, thickens, holds and moistens the tissues, skin, hair, nails, etc. Blood, protein and fat deficiency weakens, thins, cracks, etc.
3. Dryness Blood enriches, moistens the skin, hair, nails, muscles, eyes, secretions, etc. Blood, protein and fat deficiency causes dryness.
4. Coldness Blood, protein and fat build, fuel, energize, warm. Long-term low protein, low fat diets, chronic illness, drugs and or poor circulation tends to thin and reduce blood, circulation, especially to the extremities (no vital organs) leaving them cold and weak. Body temperature is not only a function of fuel, metabolism but also circulation, respiration, digestion, etc. all of which require fuel, protein and fat. Coldness occurs when function (activity) decreases. Bodily activity, function, temperature are not only a function of diet but also exercise, air, oxygen.
5. Pallor Blood is red. A decrease in blood, protein, fat and or circulation tends to cause pallor in the face, tongue, nails and lips.
6. Depression It takes energy and faith to overcome depression, a certain amount of which is normal. Everyone has highs and lows. Low energy depresses, slows the whole body, which in turn, slows, depresses the mind. On a physical level, depression is a cold, deficient and or damp disease. It is treated with an increase its opposite: heat, fire, sunshine, exercise, sweating, cooked foods, spices, protein, fat, etc. This is one scenario. External circumstances, body weight, current events, etc. can also lead to depression, if one chooses to react negatively. You always have a choice to react positively or negatively. Meditation, focus on God and reading scripture helps defeat depression and all other negative emotions. Think positive and the ultimate positive is God.
7. Dizziness The brain (nerves, blood rich organ) controls holds the nervous system, bones, muscles, ligaments, etc. Blood, protein and fat deficiency, and or a sudden decrease of blood flow to the head, decreases the strength, holding power of the brain, muscles, ligaments, etc. causing dizziness, swaying and or loss of consciousness.
8. Insomnia The spirit, shen sleeps in the heart. Blood fuels the heart. Blood, protein and fat deficiency weakens the heart’s ability to hold, causing the spirit to wander, rise up into and stimulate the brain, thinking, dreaming and or wakening.
9. Forgetfulness Blood, protein and fat deficiency, in the extreme, weaken the mind’s ability (fuel) to remember, hold thoughts, past memories.
10. Attention Deficit Disorder Blood, protein and fat deficiency and or too much sugar tends to weaken the mind’s ability to focus, hold thoughts, pay attention (please see Case Histories). Milk, yogurt, cereal, bread, nuts, etc. are low protein, low fat.
11. Anemia Low hemoglobin count is a symptom of blood, protein and fat deficiency as are fatigue, weakness, pallor, coldness, dizziness, headache, anorexia, etc. In TCM, iron supplements do not build blood
12. Hot flashes Blood and jing cool moisten and control fire (energy). When they are weak, deficient (not excess) fire, energy tends to occasionally rise up and out, rage, perspire of control.
13. Numbness Blood, protein and fat deficiency and or poor circulation, in the extreme, tends to thin, weaken and numb the bones, muscles, nerves, etc. in the hands and feet.
14. Arthritis, pain in limbs, hands and feet Blood, protein and fat deficiency, in the extreme, tends to thin, dry, weaken and pain the nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, etc. in the hands and feet.
15. Shaking, tremors Reduced circulation and or protein and fat deficiency tend to weaken the muscles, tendons, nerves, etc. causing shaking and or tremors (lack of control, holding).
16. Hysteria Long-term blood, protein and fat deficiency thins everything: skin, hair, nails, bones, brain, nerves, etc., which in turn, thins memory, attention span, rationality, emotions, courage, etc.
The liver stores, cleanses (removes excess protein, fat, cholesterol, uric acid, etc.) and releases the blood. It also produces bile (aids in the digestion of fat). A weak and or congested liver reduces blood flow, circulation, while increasing cholesterol, plaque, hardening of the arteries, blood pressure, etc.
The heart circulates the blood throughout the body, head to toe, via its vessels, arteries, veins and capillaries. The complete circuit occurs once every ninety seconds. Clogged arteries (high cholesterol, plaque) and veins reduce and distort the flow of blood to the organs, bones, muscles, brain, etc. causing stagnant blood symptoms.
The kidneys store jing (builds and fuels all structure, function); controls urination, purifies the blood, filters nitrogenous wastes (primarily protein and fat), regulates pH, etc. All function (digestion, circulation, respiration, etc.) declines when jing or kidney function decline.
All blood passes through the liver (Chapter 10). The liver stores, cleanses (removes excess protein, fat, cholesterol, uric acid, etc.) and releases the blood. Too much protein, fat and cholesterol (thick, sticky and hard nutrients), especially animal, tends to thicken, clog and weaken the liver. Less cholesterol is removed, more collects and hardens in the blood (high cholesterol), arteries (plaque, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure) stagnating and reducing blood, circulation, especially to the extremities: head, arms and legs producing quasi blood deficiency symptoms fatigue, pallor, pain, inflammation, dryness, coldness, shaking, etc.. Men, in general, tend to eat high protein, high fat and low vegetables and fruit.
Overbuilt, thick blood
Dietary tendenciesOverbuilt, acidic diet, Too much protein, fatRed meat, pork, veal, wild game, chicken, turkey, fish, pizza, lasagna, fries, chips, oilToo much sugarCookies, pastries, alcoholToo little cleansing Vegetables, fruitin the extreme, tend to cause Thick, stagnant blood, pitta High cholesterol, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, dark complexion, purple lips and nails, dark menstrual blood, blood clots, dysmenorrhea, arthritis, fixed pain, lumps, acne, cysts, tumors, warts, psoriasis, cancer, anger, irritability, violence, etc
Stagnant (overbuilt, thick) blood symptoms, mild to severe
1. Purple lips and nails Too much protein, fat, in the extreme, thickens, stagnates and darkens (purple color) the blood in the extremities, arms, legs, head, beneath the lips, nails.
2. Dark complexion Stagnant, thick blood darkens the complexion.
3. Dark menstrual blood Stagnant, thick, high protein, high fat blood in the liver thickens and darkens before passing into the uterus, darkening the menstrual blood.
4. Blood clots Stagnant, thick, high protein, high fat blood tends to harden and clot.
5. High cholesterol Excess fat weakens liver’s purifying, cleansing function creating excess fat, cholesterol in the bloodstream.
6. High blood pressure (hypertension) See #9
7. Lumps, cysts and tumors Thick, stagnant blood tends to harden into cysts, lumps and or tumors (benign and malignant). Malignant tumors tend to be very painful and fixed in location, i.e. do not move.
8. Fixed and stabbing pain Thick blood (too much protein and fat) tends to thicken, harden the muscles, tendons, etc. restricting movement while creating fixed and stabbing pain.
9. Hardening of the arteries Excess fat and cholesterol in the blood tends to adhere to the walls of the arteries, reducing size, diameter, flexibility and blood flow, while also increasing pressure.
10. Cancer The United States and Argentina, the two highest meat-consuming countries in the world, have the highest colon cancer rates. Cancer is largely a red meat, high protein, high fat, hard, thick disease known for its rapid growth and propensity to occur in tumor form.
Stagnant blood (high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, liver congestion, etc.) distorts and reduces blood flow, while increasing pressure, heat, dryness and or muscular tension. It is further aggravated, dried and overheated, by hot spices, stimulant drugs, coffee, tea, alcohol, smoking, anger, frustration, hot, dry climates, etc.
Excess heat in the blood
11. Fever High cholesterol, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, etc. increase pressure, energy, heat, temperature and fever
12. Red eyes, face, tongue and skin High cholesterol, arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, etc. increase blood pressure, forcing blood up into the head, eyes, mouth, tongue and skin, reddening all.
13. Dry, redden and irritate High protein, fat not only thickens the blood, arteries but also thickens, dries, reddens and or irritates the skin, nose, sinuses, etc. Blood, nutrients build, fuel, moisten, cool, calm, etc.
14. Skin diseases Blood builds fuels and cleanses all tissue including the skin. Too much protein and fat tends to overbuild, thicken the blood, which in turn, overbuilds, thickens, dries and reddens the skin (hard, scaly, itchy, warts, psoriasis).
15. Insomnia Blood stagnation: arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis and high blood pressure overheats and over pressurizes the body, heart, brain, adversely affecting sleep (dreaming, awakening). Sleeping is a cooling, calming activity.
16. Bleeding Excess protein, fat tends to create tumors. All tumors are blood rich, and in the extreme, can bleed into the skin, stools, urine, etc. Reduced circulation, blood tends to thin the vessels also causing them to easily bruise, bleed.
17. Sweaty hands and feet Too much protein, fat and starch, in the extreme, tends to clog, swell and overheat the liver and large intestine, which in turn, clogs and overheats the body creating excessive pressure, perspiration, passing, leaking out the extremities, hands, feet.
The lungs control respiration, exchange of gases between the lungs (blood) and the environment. The inhalation takes in air, oxygen while the exhalation eliminates carbon dioxide (gaseous waste product). Oxygen (pure chi) purifies and strengthens the blood, body.
