The body, blood, bones, sex organs, hormones, etc. build up and break down (cleanses) largely according to food, nutrients, to which there are only two: building and cleansing. Building nutrients, foods, protein, fat, meat, chicken, turkey. eggs, cheese, etc. build, fuel, hold, warm, etc. Cleansing foods, nutrients, water, minerals, fruit, vegetables, grains, etc. reduce, cleanse, cool and moisten.

Protein and fat build and fuel the ovaries, uterus, hormones, ovum, sperm, fetus, etc. Too little, in the extreme, tends to thin the blood, reduce circulation causing fatigue, pallor, coldness, thin skin, hair, nails and bones, anemia, etc. in addition to amenorrhea (little or no period), infertility, miscarriage, and or short-term pregnancy. It takes a certain amount of blood, protein and fat, to build and hold a baby. Anything less creates deficiency, lack of holding.

Many women tend to eat low protein, low fat (milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, beans, nuts, etc.) and high carbohydrate (pasta, bread, salads, fruits, juices, shakes, smoothies, etc.) diets. Low protein and low fat diets build less blood, structure, function. Too many carbohydrates (vegetables, salads, fruits, juices, etc.) tend to dilute and weaken digestion, acid and enzymes, reducing nutrient absorption, blood, structure and function.

Low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate diets generally benefit those suffering from excess protein and fat (high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, gout, dysmenorrhea, warts, tumors, cancer, etc.) not those who are trying to get and stay pregnant, although too much protein and fat can form tumors and or excessive tissue that interferes with conception, pregnancy.

Blood, protein and fat build and fuel sperm, testosterone, erections, etc. Too little protein and fat, in the extreme, weakens, decreases fertility, sperm count, erections (premature ejaculation, impotence), etc. Red meat, eggs, chicken, etc. build better erections, increase fertility and sexual energy better than beans, nuts and seeds. Too much protein and fat, in the extreme, tends to decrease blood flow to the prostate, testes, etc. also impotence, premature ejaculations, etc. It also tends to form tumors and or cancer, which can attack the prostate, testes, liver, etc. Low protein and low fat diets cool diminish sexual energy but also cleanse excessive, overbuilt energy, structure.

Blood, protein and fat deficiency is curable via an increase in building foods, especially animal: red meat, chicken, turkey, eggs, hard cheese, etc. The choice of protein and fat depends on the deficiency, as severe deficiencies require severe measures, foods, animal protein and fat. The hotter middle diet, meal plan (for deficiency) is recommended, in addition to the following supplements. Siberian ginseng stimulates, nourishes the spleen, digestion, blood. Evening primrose oil and black currant oil nourish, strengthen the reproductive organs. Eating seeds: sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, etc. helps build seeds. Check with your doctor before making any dietary, herbal changes.

Laxative and bitter herbs (golden seal, gentian, etc.) including coffee, caffeine should be avoided, as they are cleansing, downward moving in nature, which is contrary to pregnancy. Pregnant women want to build fuel and hold, not cool and cleanse. Coffee, caffeine also irritates the breasts.

Case history: A long-term customer of mine had suffered several miscarriages. She was eating a macrobiotic diet (low protein. low fat and high carbohydrate). I diagnosed her condition as blood deficiency. Her diet was anemic, too little building. She did not have enough blood, protein and fat in the womb to hold her baby. I recommended red meat (best blood builder) and chicken three to four times a week or more in addition to cooked vegetables, grains, Evening Primrose Oil (sexual organs) and Siberian ginseng (strengthens digestion). I also told her to wait four months (time it takes to rebuild blood) before trying to get pregnant. She now has two healthy boys.

In every profession, there are good and bad practitioners. The bad practitioners of medicine give stupid, ignorant and sometomes harmful advice that hurt, enslave and demean their patients as well as themselves. I will use Dr. Oz as an example. This is a personal opinion based on my professional experience (licensed Acupuncture Physician (FL 1992- 2002), traditional Chinese medicine (diagnose and treat via diet, herbs, nutritional supplements, acupuncture, massage, etc.). I also owned a health food store for 17 years. I counseled thousands of people.

The following are three examples of less than stellar advice given by Dr Oz. I will The first two are dietary as Dr. Oz, on his television show and Oprah, advised that it was all right to drink three to four cups of coffee per day, engage in sex, or masturbation if you’re an uptight middle age man (it will help relax you). The third is body odor, which according to Dr. Oz on Oprah (idiot patient) is generally caused by unknown factors (some people just naturally stink, attract bad, stinky bacteria), race and gender, not diet (minor factor).

My medical background is traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines. They are both 5,000+ years old. Regarding sex and caffeine, their advice is the EXACT OPPOSITE. They advise men to restrain, forgo the ejaculation and or practice celibacy, as the release of sexual essence (sperm, etc.) is extremely weakening, drying, thinning, etc. Excessive sex tends to accelerate the aging process, drying, thinning and weakening of the skin, bones, hair, organs, glands, brain, spine, etc. in both sexes. It is the forbidden fruit, located in the center of the garden. Coffee, caffeine accelerates the consumption, burning of sexual essence (jing in traditional Chinese medicine) thereby accelerating the aging, drying, thinning and weakening of the body mind. Both medicines would barely allow three or four cups a month. Both medicines (5,000+ years old) advise the exact opposite of Dr. Oz. What does that tell you about Dr. Oz and modern medicine?

Both medicines would also consider him an idiot for teaching the idea that body odor has more to do with race, gender and unknown factors than it does diet. Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines both state that body odor is a function of diet, not the aforementioned.

On a past Oprah show, Dr. Oz was the guest expert and body odor the topic. On the show, was a young couple, an overweight, obese man and his wife. The man had terrible body odor. The show started and Oprah asked (rightly, intuitively) if diet had anything to do with body odor. Dr. Oz dismissed her, argument by saying that if you eat onions and garlic you smell like onions and garlic but the real causes of body odor were unknown factors, race and gender.

Some people for some unknown reason attracted bad bacteria that caused bad body odor. He also went on to say that some races, like black people had larger pores and therefore stunk, and some gender (I am assuming women) naturally stink because of hormones. Hormones are generally an issue associated with women, and have no smell, as far as I can tell. Most body odor is caused by poor diet and stagnation of energy, blood, fluids, stools, etc. (see article at end) not race, gender. In my opinion, Dr. Oz seems racist and gender biased. The worst part of this story is Oprah and her audience who just nodded in agreement. Intuition is one thing. Following it up is another. Not following produces ignorance.

The intuition of health is knowledge. The standard-bearer of disease is ignorance. Does your doctor educate or enslave you through ignorance, drugs, surgery, radiation, promises, diplomas, fear? If you are tired of this merry-go-round, read Hot and Cold Health.

BODY ODOR The body digests, transforms food, nutrients into blood into structure into function, into health or disease. The body is sweet and sour by nature. The sweet smell comes from blood, food, nutrients, protein, water and sugar, which are sweet tasting. The sour smell comes from the stomach (digestion, fermentation) and or an excess of sour foods. The sweet and sour smells, and or cold, damp tissue tends to produce a musty odor. Protein and fat, especially animal and poor food combining tend to produce highly pervasive, offensive odors.

The stomach is the first digestive organ to receive and process food, nutrients. It mixes food and fluids with hydrochloric acid (HCl) and other enzymes, designed specifically to digest animal protein and fat. This mixture sits, ferments, breaks down before moving down to the small intestine, for further digestion, eventual nutrient absorption. Digestion, fermentation is a souring process, which is why everyone tends to have a slightly sour smell.

Food that spends too long of a time in the stomach tends over ferment, spoil, creating excessive sour smell that can accumulate, overflow and rise up through the throat, breath, skin, armpits, etc. Overeating, tight clothing, eating while standing up, late meals and obesity tends to weaken and slow the movement of food, creating abdominal bloating, gas, burping and sour breath. Too many sour foods (milk, yogurt, ice cream and cheese, dairy and non-dairy tend also tend to cause sour body odor.

Eating salads, fruits or and or drinking cold drinks at the beginning of the meal tends to dilute and weaken digestion, acid and enzymes, slowing the movement of food. Too many vegetables (especially raw, salads), tropical fruits, juices, sugary foods, cold drinks, etc. especially in combination with dairy products (milk, yogurt and soft cheese) also tends to weaken digestion, nutrient absorption, blood, while increasing waste (solid and liquid) as whatever food, nutrients not digested becomes waste. This type of waste, dampness, in the extreme (loose stools, diarrhea and constipation), tends to produce sweet, sour and or musty body odors. Low protein and low fat diets, in the extreme, also tend to weaken, slow all function, including digestion, movement of food.

Too many grains (pasta, bread, pastry, etc.), especially in combination with oil, fat and sugar, tend to collect and clog the small and large intestines, just like excess cholesterol collects and clogs the arteries. The clog, accumulated matter (bread, pizza dough, cookies, chips, etc.) tends to be moist, damp and sweet. In the extreme, it tends to produce sweet, damp and musty body odor. It can also heat up and produce hot, damp and smelly rashes in the armpits and or groin. Avoid alcohol (beer, wine, etc.) and ice cream as both worsen dampness, body odor, rashes, etc. Animal foods, oil, etc. in excess, tend to produce damp heat.

The musty, sweet smell is a stale, moldy smell, usually associated with dampness. Damp diets (low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate), obesity, edema, cellulite, inactivity and or bulimia increase stagnant pools of dampness and or deteriorated tissues throughout the body creating a sweet, musty body odor.

The middle diet, meal plan adjusted accordingly is recommended. Cooked foods and spices (cardamom, cumin, coriander, fennel, cayenne, turmeric, etc.) increase digestion, metabolism, burning, drying of excess fluids, damp, sugar, sour smell. Spices burn, dry dampness, Bitter herbs also drain dampness, but are very cooling (contraindicated for weak, cold digestion). Cold, weak digestion tends to cause dampness. Reduce all damp foods: dairy: milk, yogurt, cheese, pizza, salads, cold drinks, alcohol, etc. Do not overeat. Take a walk after you eat. Be patient, as it will take months and or years of good eating to eliminate old, diseased tissues and rebuild, replace with new healthy smelling tissues.

The following  are excerpts from Hot and Cold Health and Disease (c) 2009,  based on Western, Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicines.  Cellulite, edema and yeast infections are essentially the same disease, as they share not only the same cause (cold, damp, deficient diet) and gender (women, tend to be cold, damp, deficient, men, hot, dry and excessive) but also the same effect, disease, symptoms: abdominal bloating, loose stools, diarrhea, mucous, phlegm, cysts, edema, cellulite and yeast infections.

Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines, both 5,000+ years old, are  based on the observation of nature (physical world, matter) of which we are a part of.  The material world is controlled, held together, defined by energy.  There are two forms, opposites (antagonistic yet complimentary), kinds  of energy: hot (building, fire, male, yang) and cold (cleansing, water, female, yin). The correct balance produces the correct amount of hot and cold, energy, which then forms the correct hot (dry, active, ascending) and cold (watery, inactive, descending) amounts of blood, structure and function.  The incorrect amounts, too much or too little hot or cold, build disease via too much or too little hot or cold energy, blood, structure and function.

Everything (structure, function, nutrient, food, herb, emotion, gender, climate, etc. is defined in energetic terms, as everything is a balance of hot (male) and cold (female) energies, with one energy always in excess. There is nothing neutral.

Cellulite is excess water (cold) and fat (hot)  that tends to accumulate in pockets around the abdomen and thighs, more so in women than men. Many women tend to eat cold, damp low protein, low-fat (milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) and high carbohydrate (salads, tropical fruits, juices, etc.) diets. Menstruation (3-7 days every month for thirty plus years) is a cooling process as all blood loss; hemorrhage drains, weakens and cools all function, including digestion.

Digestion not only transforms food, nutrients into blood but also burns, dries excess fluids. Weak digestion transforms, burns less food, nutrients, fat, water, etc.  More fluid and fat accumulate, is stored in the intestines, abdomen, thighs, arteries and or veins. Cellulite while both watery and fatty is mostly water. It is generally a “cold” condition, caused by long-term cold, damp, low protein, low-fat and high carbohydrate diet.

Edema is the accumulation of fluid (water, cold)  in the soft tissues and can occur anywhere in the body: head, arms, legs, etc.  It is a cold, damp disease, caused in general, by poor diet and or weak digestion. It tends to attack women (menstruation) more than men, as many women tend to eat low protein, low-fat and high carbohydrate diets. Men (testosterone, hot, building hormone) are the opposite. They tend to eat high protein, high fat diets giving them an extra metabolic, energy boost.

Digestion is the ultimate fat burner and diuretic as it heats, burns, metabolizes food and fluids. Too little building, low protein and fat (milk, yogurt, beans, nuts and seeds), in the extreme tend to weaken digestion. Too many carbohydrates (salads, tropical fruits, juices, smoothies, cold drinks and sugar), in the extreme, dilute and weaken digestion, reducing nutrient absorption, blood, energy, heat, while increasing waste product: liquid and solid. Whatever food, nutrients not digested, absorbed become waste.

The uterus and vagina are naturally moist. Too much coldness, moisture tends to create clear or white vaginal discharges (leucorrhea), vaginitis, yeast infections, etc. The uterus, vagina and rest of the body are heated largely by digestive energy, function. Digestion not only transforms and transports food, nutrients into blood, but also produces excess energy, heat that heats and dries the body. Weak digestion tends to cool, weaken and moisten the body (lungs, uterus, vagina, etc) with excess fluids: mucus, phlegm, etc. that allows yeast to prosper, infect. Candida Albicans is also, in general a cold, damp and deficient disease

Long-term low protein, low fat (milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) and high carbohydrate (salads, fruit, juices, cold drinks, sugar, etc.) diets tend to cool, weaken and moisten digestion, which in turn, cools and moistens (discharges, mucous, yeast, etc.) the uterus, vagina. The hot middle diet, spices is recommended. For more information please read Candidiasis (page 167).  Vinegar douche or inserting a clove of garlic directly into the vagina can sometime helps yeast infections. Check with your doctor first.

The cure for cold, damp, deficient diseases is simple but time-consuming, requiring months, years of good diet and exercise to not only cure but also prevent.  Heat the body, increase metabolism via protein, fat (eggs, chicken, turkey, etc.), cooked foods, soups, spices (cardamom, cumin, fennel, ginger, cayenne, turmeric, etc.), etc. while reducing salads, tropical and citrus fruits, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, cold drinks, smoothies, sugar, etc.

Protein and fat build fuel and heat. Too little protein and fat tends to weaken digestion, metabolism, burning less protein, fat, water, etc. while increasing waste product, solid and liquid, as whatever food, nutrients, not digested, absorbed becomes waste that is temporarily stored in the large intestine and later released, eliminated. Water, minerals, sugar, fruits, vegetables, juices, etc. reduce, cleanse, cool and moisten. Too many tends to dilute and weaken digestion, acid and enzymes, reducing nutrient absorption, blood, burning less, storing more fat and water: mucous, phlegm, cysts, edema, cellulite, etc.

This is a great book. Especially if you are female, and struggle with symptoms of cellulite, being over weight, sinusitis, and chronic fatigue. Most female diets consist of diet cokes, energy bars, smoothies, and salads, not to mention ice cream, and other feel good foods.(at least mine did) Sooner or later, health problems with appear, and by switching to a hotter diet, one will begin to see the effects immediately. All of those symptoms were like connecting the dots, and I am now soooooooo relieved to have finally gotten a handle on what I should be eating, and getting rid of my chronic problems. This is a must read for anyone who wants to take responsibility for their own health!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! D.L.

                                                                 INTRODUCTION

Life, health, disease, happiness, sadness, etc. are a function of body, mind and spirit (soul of God).

The body builds up and breaks down (cleanses) largely according to food, nutrients, to which, there are only two: building (hot, yang) and cleansing (cold, yin). The correct balance of building and cleansing foods produces the correct amount of blood, structure and function, where the body can thrive. Any amounts, greater or less, too much or too little building or cleansing, in the extreme, tends to cause disease via too much or too little blood, structure and function.

Simple diet and common herbs can prevent and or cure most physical disease, but not overcome aging, deterioration and death, nor intellectually or spiritually develop the mind to the extent that reading, study and practice of scripture, prayer, meditation, kindness, generosity and devotion to God can. The highest health, goal is spiritual development, communion with God.

The body digests food and transforms nutrients into blood, structure and function. Whatever food, nutrients and non-nutrients not digested, absorbed, become waste, and sent down to the large intestine for eventual elimination. All waste is toxic.

Low protein and fat diets, in the extreme, weaken reduce digestion, elimination, nutrient absorption and blood.

Too many cold, damp foods, drinks, in the extreme, tend to dilute and weaken digestion, elimination, nutrient absorption, blood, respiration, circulation, reproduction, etc.

The liver stores, cleanses (removes excess protein, fat cholesterol, uric acid, poisons, etc.) and releases the blood.

Too much protein and fat (thick, hard, sticky nutrients), especially animal, in the extreme, tends to clog, thicken and weaken the liver. Less fat, cholesterol and uric acid are cleansed, removed, more stays in the blood (high cholesterol, high uric acid), arteries (plaque, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure), joints (arthritis, gout), skin (warts, acne), etc. Overall circulation of blood, nutrients is also reduced, especially to the extremities.

The heart circulates the blood via the arteries, veins and capillaries. Blood carries nutrients and wastes. Too much protein and fat (includes cholesterol) tends to overbuild, thicken and stagnate the blood reducing circulation, blood flow, especially to the extremities: head, arms and legs.

Poor diet, nutrition tends to cause most disease. Too much or too little building or cleansing, in the extreme, tends to cause disease via too much or too little blood, structure and function. Despite the variety, there are only two dietary diseases: overbuilt (excess heat) and under built (deficient heat).

I was a licensed Acupuncture Physician (FL 1992-2002) and owner, operator of a small health food store, Food and Thought, Hollywood, FL 1984-2001. For seventeen years, I questioned, listened, observed and counseled my customers (400+ per week), many of whom I saw regularly, week to week, month to month. I always asked, “What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?”

In the beginning, I was confused and overwhelmed by the variety of symptoms, diets, herbs, etc., but after a short while I got it. There were only two symptoms, diets, herbs, opposites: hot (yang) and cold (yin)  Most people were eating diets that were too building or too cleansing, thereby developing symptoms, diseases that were too building (hot) or too cleansing (cold). They were also taking supplements, herbs, drugs, etc. that were too building or too cleansing, relative to their conditions.

I re-discovered, reconfigured the traditional diet, increasing and decreasing protein and fat, especially animal (West, America) while increasing eggs, cheese, beans, nuts, seeds, grains, vegetables, fruit, spices and Chinese herbs. This new “middle diet”  in theory and practice could prevent and or cure most disease on a universal level, as there is only one body, therefore only one way to eat, exercise, etc. A woman may menstruate but she still has to rebuild her blood, body the exact same way that a man does, by eating the same blood-building foods. She also has to eat more during the day than at night, as digestion is stronger during the day. You are not only what you eat, but also what you digest.

The rules of health, life are the same for everyone as everyone (heart, liver, kidneys, earth, sun, etc.) is the same. The middle diet, meal plan is based on the body’s nutritional composition, ratio of building to cleansing nutrients, which is approximately 1:2 (1/3 building and 2/3 cleansing).

Each food, herb group is adjustable. The order of eating, digestion is not. Eat from hot to cold. Eat soup +/- protein and fat first, then protein and fat, grain and vegetables. Finish with fruit and tea. Stimulate digestion (soup, protein, fat spices, cooked foods,) in the beginning, and cool and cleanse at the end.

Building foods, nutrients require greater digestion stronger acid, enzymes and bile. Vegetables and fruit require little or no digestion and tend to stop digestion, dilute and reduce digestion, acid, enzymes, nutrient absorption, blood, which is why the beginning foods are soup (hot) and or protein and fat.

The middle diet, meal plan has two variations to counter the two extremes of dietary disease. Variation #1 is the colder middle diet designed to counter overbuilt hot conditions. It is vegetarian in nature, more fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts, seeds, dairy and eggs (not considered animal) and less red meat, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey, red fish and fried foods. Avoid red meat, especially pork.  The less animal  and fried foods, the more fruit and vegetables,  the more fat, cholesterol, arterial plaque, tumors, uric acid, etc. are cleansed, eliminated. Fasting one day a week on fruit juice helps, as do cooking instructions and meal plans (Chapter 4, Cooking Class).

  Colder middle diet, meal plan
  For overbuilt, hot, pitta conditions
+/- 1/3 Protein and fatIncrease beans, nuts, seeds (high in HDL) and dairySupplement with small amounts: eggs, chicken or turkeyDecrease, eliminate  red meat, pork, pizza, fries, alcohol
+/- 1/3 GrainIncrease whole, cracked (includes white rice)Decrease flour: cookies, pastries, pretzels, junk
+/- 1/3 Vegetables (3- 5) and fruit (1)Increase raw (cabbage, celery), cooked broccoli, carrots with tops, cauliflower, hard squash, parsnips, etcIncrease fruit
+/-  Spices, herbs (bitter) and or tea (chrysanthemum)

Variation #2 is the hotter middle diet designed to counter under built, cold conditions. It is hotter, more building (animal protein, fat, cooked foods and spices) and less cold, damp (milk, yogurt, soft cheese, ice cream, salads, tropical fruits, juices, cold drinks and sugar). Do not avoid fruit. Fruit is an important part of the diet (at end to of the meal or between meals), especially when eating animal food (tends to be constipating). Fish is questionable due to possible mercury contamination and or unsanitary farming.

  Hotter middle diet, meal plan
For under built, cold, damp, vata, kapha
+/- 1/3 Protein and fatIncrease hard cheese, eggs, chicken, turkey or red meatDecrease milk, yogurt and soft cheeses
+/-      1/3 GrainIncrease, whole and cracked grains (white rice).Decrease bread, flour (cookies, pastries, pretzels)
+/- 1/3 Vegetables (3- 5) and fruit (1)Increase cooked vegetables: roots, round and leafy Decrease salads, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplantDecrease tropical fruits, juices, cold drinks
+/- Spices (use several) and herbs (Siberian ginseng)
+/- Condiments: soy sauce, vegetable oil, rice vinegar

Both variations are temporary once health, balance restore at which time the middle diet resumes. Asian and many American restaurants regularly serve this diet. Many will specially prepare your food, steamed with the sauce on the side if that is your wish.

Health and disease always determine the menu. Disease, suffering is often the best teacher, as it speaks loudly, painfully, clearly identifying not only offending, diseased structures and functions, but also their corresponding, diseased diets, herbs, lifestyles, etc.

All disease is defined by its collection of symptoms. Biological functions (digestion, respiration, circulation, etc.) produce biological symptoms. Biological structures (stomach, spleen, liver, lungs, heart, etc.) produce biological functions. Blood, nutrients, foods produce biological structures. Every structure is nutrient, food, herb, energy, exercise, etc. specific.

 Symptoms ← function ← structure ← blood ← food

Many diseases, for example, Plantar Fasciitis, Restless Leg Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromialgia, Lupus and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome share similar symptoms: pain, inflammation, redness, weakness, coldness and or shaking in the extremities, arms, legs, hands and feet. They also tend to share similar diets.

Anemic, low protein, low fat (milk, yogurt, ice cream, beans, nuts, etc) and high carbohydrate (salads, tropical fruits, juices, smoothies, shakes, sodas and sugar) diets, in the extreme, tend to reduce, thin the blood (blood deficiency), which in turn, thins, dries, inflames, pains, weakens and shakes the bones, ligaments, muscles, nerves, especially in the extremities: head, arms and legs. Many women tend to suffer autoimmune illnesses due to the tendency to eat low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate diets.

High protein, high fat diets, (red meat, pork, chicken, fried foods, etc.) in the extreme (years, decades), tends to thicken and stagnate the liver (congestion), blood (high cholesterol) and arteries (plaque, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure) reducing circulation, blood flow, especially to the extremities, producing blood deficiency symptoms (pain, dryness, inflammation, weakness, etc.). It is a common pathology especially among men, as many tend to eat high protein, fat and starch, in addition to caffeine, alcohol and or tobacco.

All disease is defined by its collection of symptoms. All symptoms occur in stages. Stage 1 is cause: poor diet (too building, hot or too cleansing, cold). Poor diet tends to weaken digestion (stage 2), elimination (stage 3), blood (stage 4), circulation (stage 5) and organ function (stage 6). Most autoimmune illnesses are stage 6.

It is the initial beginning stages, symptoms, diseased organs, not the latter, that one must treat to fully cure eliminate all symptoms. Treating the latter stages, symptoms, organs without treating the beginning symptoms, organs never cures but only prolongs and worsens the disease, suffering. It is like cutting off the head, leaves and flowers of a dandelion weed without removing its roots. The dandelion leaves and flowers eventually grow back.

Most fifth stage or greater cures may weaken digestion, elimination and blood, further worsening already existing symptoms. Correct the diet first, which generally alleviates many of the latter symptoms, stages, thus narrowing the range and scope of additional therapies.

Complete biological knowledge (structure, function, disease, nutrition and diet) is necessary as all the parts (structures, functions) work together and many times share similar symptoms, diseases but not necessarily causes and treatments. Removing the cause is generally the first treatment. The second treatment is rebuilding, following the body’s design, plan, as every structure, function is food, nutrient, herb, energy, etc, specific. There is no guessing when it comes to treatment, only following.

Most disease is chronic in nature taking months, years, decades to develop, and consequently months, years to heal. There are no magic pills, herbs, drugs, surgery hat will cure chronic disease in a short amount of time. Additional therapies: herbsl supplements, acupuncture, pharmaceutical drugs, surgery, radiation, etc. may be required, depending on severity. You have to do what works, not what you think will work, as wrong ideas, actions, can have wrong, seriously painful consequences. Read the following personal story.

In my twenties, on a yearly basis, I used to get tonsillitis, strep throat. In 1979, I got it bad. I tried treating it with diet, herbs and acupuncture. Nothing worked. Around the fifth, sixth day, in addition to intense pain, I started hallucinating, seeing ghosts, especially during the night, early morning hours. By the eighth day, I could barely talk or swallow. My left tonsil, swollen twice its size, completely covered with white streptococcus, obstructing my throat.

I went, ran to the doctor. He was a very nice man. He yelled at me, telling me how foolish I was (he was right) that I was seriously ill. He gave me a shot of penicillin. Twenty minutes later, when I arrived home, the swelling and strep had completely disappeared. The next day when I saw the doctor, he was amazed that I had healed so quickly, that mine was the worst case of tonsillitis he had ever seen. He told me how lucky I was that I did not seriously hurt myself (burst tonsil, death). Everything, including natural therapies, personal philosophies, etc. has its limitations. Not seeing a doctor would have been a big mistake. “Pride cometh before the fall”.

The following is my story, so far. At age three, I knew I was going to be a “doctor” despite disliking doctors (needles). At age ten (1962) and lasting the next seventeen years was another awakening, my mother’s breast cancer, treatment and subsequent side effects: radical mastectomy (removal of entire breast and surrounding tissue), extensive radiation and mega-chemotherapy.  I accompanied her on her weekend trips into the city, sat in the hospital, radiation ward watching her and others, wheeled in and out, the out always devastatingly worse. She suffered greatly. Her original wound, surgery, radiation burn, wound never healed. It always bled. She suffered severe edema (elephant arms), insomnia, depression and more.

I took my dream, ambition to the University of Pittsburgh (1971-1974). Midway through the second year. I became disenchanted with the program, required sciences, as I could not understand their relationship to health. I felt I was going in the wrong direction; so, I went in the opposite direction, political science, for a while.

In 1973, I read Be Here Now by Ram Dass (Dr. Richard Alpert). It changed my life. The book told the story of his transformation from Western Psychologist to Hindu (Eastern religion) mystic. I cannot say that I understood most of what I read, but what I did understand were the sections on diet and yoga. I changed my diet to vegetarian and started practicing Hatha (postural) yoga including deep abdominal breathing, daily for the next five years. The changes were immediate and positive. My skin became clearer. I had greater energy and was more relaxed.

I started reading more books on: diet, nutrition, herbs, etc. Most were anti cancer, heart disease, high protein, high fat, animal foods, and pro vegetarian. I grew up on high protein, high fat, in addition to bread, noodles, vegetables, fruit, etc. The change, transition to low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate diets: lacto ovo vegetarian, lacto vegetarian, vegan, raw foods, fruitarian, sproutarian and macrobiotic (10 years), was not too difficult. I ate less meat, eggs, cheese, milk and more fruit, vegetables, sprouts, beans, grains, etc.

I made these changes over a fifteen year period (1973- 1988). For the first five years, I felt great as I eliminated all my excess fat, cholesterol, water, etc. Then I got worse over the next several years suffering severe weight loss, impotence, tonsillitis, hair loss, insomnia and eczema. Despite my “vast” knowledge, I had gone from one extreme (overbuilt, high protein, high fat) to the other (under built, low protein, low fat). I had no control of my health. I did nit know what I was doing. I needed professional help, medical guidance, which was why I chose traditional Chinese medicine as it was not only ancient but also placed more emphasis on diet, exercise, sex, etc. unlike relatively new Western allopathic medicine (more drugs, surgery, radiation, etc.). All medicine has its place, the center, director of which is the patient (chooses the treatment).

Health is common sense. The body is made from food. The correct diet produces health, the incorrect, disease. Exercise and drugs do not cure high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, etc. Less animal protein, fat and more vegetables and fruit do. Exercise, herbs, drugs and good thoughts do not build blood, cure anemia, thin skin, hair, infertility, etc. Red meat, eggs, chicken, turkey, cheese, etc. do.

I once counseled a man, early thirties, pale, low energy who had come to my store to buy iron. His Chinese acupuncturist (also an M.D., well known, respected) had diagnosed him as blood deficient, anemic and recommended iron. I told him I was also an acupuncturist, more recent, would he mind answering a few questions? How long had he been seeing the doctor? (6 months) What happened six months ago? (new girlfriend: vegetarian). He had stopped eating meat, chicken, eggs, etc. and had become weak, tired, pale and anemic.

I told him that his diet was anemic: extremely low protein, fat; that he needed to resume eating meat, eggs, chicken, etc. to build blood, energy, not iron supplements (65% of my business was supplements). He thanked me for the advice, bought the iron and asked me what I thought of his doctor, acupuncturist. I told him I would have been more impressed if his doctor had told him to stop at Burger King first before coming to the store; as needles, herbs, supplements do not build blood (TCM). Even the best make simple mistakes, which is why you always (a) get a second opinion and most importantly (b) educate yourself, be your own expert, which is why I wrote the book. on sale Amazon $15.25 click on link below

There is no diet, herb, condition, symptom, disease, etc. that I do not know. or cannot figure out.  I have questioned and counseled thousands (see resume and case histories below) and the body, structure and function is limited in number and variations as there are only two extremes.

Knowledge, simple diet and common herbs can prevent and or cure most disease.

I will tell you why you are sick (according to traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines) and how to cure provided you supply me with certain information: age, symptoms, daily diet,  climate, etc.  I may ask further questions, as  I generally require a lot of information.

Resume (followed by Case Histories)

1971-1974  University of Pittsburgh, B.A. in political science. I wanted to be a doctor, took all the required sciences for the first two years then stopped, changed direction as I did not see the medical value of my education. I was a twenty year old kid. What did I know? For a  brief time (6 hours) I wanted to be a lawyer.

1973- 1990 The real education: Dietary experimentation: lacto ovo vegetarian> lacto vegetarian> vegan> raw foods> sproutarian> fruitarian> macrobiotic (10+ years)

1979- 1981 EREWHON (natural foods distributor) warehouse and  KUSHI INSTITUTE (macrobiotics), Boston, MA student and graduate, later worked in administration.

1984-           What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?”
For ten years +, questioned and counseled his customers (300+ per week), always asking the same question, in relation to their symptoms.  Most people were eating poorly, too building or too cleansing, thereby developing symptoms, diseases that were too building (overbuilt) or too cleansing (under built, cold, damp, weak). They were also taking supplements, herbs, etc. that were too building or too cleansing, relative to their conditions.  WHEN I COUNSEL, I GIVE EACH PATIENT  30- 60 MINUTES  UNTIL HE, SHE GETS IT.

Developed one diet (central theme plus two variations) that could prevent and or cure most disease. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder, miscarriage, GIRD, eczema, anemia, sinusitis, tooth (gum and root infection), impotence, Plantar Fasciitis, neuralgia, post nasal drip, common cold, anxiety, psoriasis (current patient),  and more were all cured by this simple diet (middle diet);

Resume #2 Case Histories (the tree shall be known by its fruit)
The following case histories were treated with the middle diet, meal plan (Chapter 2) adjusted accordingly. One “disease” can have two different, opposite causes, cures.
 Middle diet meal plan
+/- 1/3 Protein and fat+/- 1/3 Grains: whole, cracked, bread, noodles

+/- 1/3 Vegetables, cooked (3-5) and fruit (1) +/- Spices (use several)

+/- Soup (in the beginning) and or tea (at the end)

 1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) One of my customers (health food store) was suffering from IBS. Her daily, weekly symptoms were abdominal bloating, gas, pain, headaches, loose stools, constipation, colitis (inflammation) and swelling in her arms and legs (swollen twice their size). I diagnosed her condition as a cold, damp spleen (controls digestion). Her long-term diet was cold, damp, low protein, low-fat and high carbohydrate (salads, tropical fruits, juices). The coldness of her diet had weakened, dampened her digestion, elimination, etc. producing the aforementioned symptoms. I recommended the hotter middle diet, meal plan, including spices as well as reduction in cold foods and drinks. Week by week her condition got better, hotter, stronger. Nine months later, most of her symptoms had disappeared, including the swelling in her arms and legs. She was very happy. A year later, her symptoms started to reappear. She was worried about her health and had gone to see a nutritionist who had recommended golden seal (nine capsules a day) which is a bitter herb. All bitter herbs are energetically cold. I had originally diagnosed coldness as the cause of her condition, which she re-aggravated once she started taking golden seal. I refused to sell her any golden seal.
  2.  Miscarriage A long-term customer of mine had suffered several miscarriages. She was eating a macrobiotic diet (low protein, low-fat and high carbohydrate). I diagnosed her condition as blood, protein and fat deficiency. Her diet was anemic, too little building. She did not have enough blood in her womb to hold her baby. I recommended red meat (best blood builder) and chicken three to four times a week or more in addition to cooked vegetables, grains, Evening Primrose Oil (sexual organs) and Siberian ginseng (strengthens digestion). I also told her to wait four months before trying to conceive, in order to rebuild her blood. She now has two healthy boys.
 3. Indigestion, Gird (gastrointestinal reflux disorder) A female customer of mine was having digestive problems. Every time she ate, she would experience abdominal bloating, gas, burping, pain and heartburn. Her diet was anemic, low protein, low-fat and high carbohydrate (salad, fruit and grains). I suggested the hotter middle diet (more protein, fat, cooked foods) in addition to fennel seeds (one-quarter teaspoon after each meal). Three weeks later, she came back and hugged me. Her digestive problems and hot flashes had disappeared. I told her (43 years old) that her hot flashes were caused not by menopause but instead by indigestion and stagnation of energy, food in the intestines. Her doctor had diagnosed her as menopausal; which I thought was a little premature
 4. Eczema In 1989, I developed a bad, hideous case of eczema. It first started as a pimple, blister on my left hand, index finger. Over the course of two months it spread so that my entire left hand (back and fingers) and lower part of the arm were completely infected (cracked skin, bleeding, pus, etc.). My other hand (couple of fingers) was also affected although not quite as bad. This happened while I was going to acupuncture school. It was gross. I tried every Chinese herbal remedy. Nothing worked. My skin kept getting worse and worse. Eventually, I turned to Ayurvedic Medicine (Ayurvedic Healing, and Yoga of Herbs by Dr. David Frawley, O.M.D.), which recommended the use of spices. My diet at the time was bland, sweet and cold, cleansing. I increased protein, fat, cooked foods and spices (fennel, cumin, coriander, turmeric, ginger, etc.) while reducing juices, fruits, etc. I used a lot spice (five to seven at a time, per meal). Within three weeks, my eczema, in addition to abdominal bloating and gas cleared up. I did have eczema as a teenager, although not as serious.
 5. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). One of my customers came to see me about her eleven-year-old daughter (very thin) who had been diagnosed with ADD. Her school wanted to put her daughter on Ritalin in addition to the drugs that she was already taking: four months of Adderall and Dexedrine. She did not know what to do. I told her to bring her daughter in and let me question her. I had never counseled a child before but I did not think it would be any different from an adult. She brought her daughter in. I sat and questioned her for an hour. There was nothing wrong with her except for poor diet and lack of attention, at home and in the school, overcrowded classrooms. I told her mother to start feeding her more protein, building foods (red meat, eggs, chicken, etc.) especially for breakfast. She was already eating grains and vegetables. I also advised fish liver oil in addition to greater personal attention. Six months later, her mother wrote me to thank me telling me how well her daughter was doing. On her recent report card, she had gotten all A’s and one B (math) without the use of Ritalin or any other drug.
  6. Anal Fissure A friend had developed an anal fissure (tear in the intestines). He went to his doctor who told him that there was no cure. The best that he could do was operate, sew it back together; however the operation, procedure might make him temporarily incontinent (urine and bowels) and or impotent. I told him to skip the operation and just change, soften his diet (cooked vegetables, watery grains, etc.) which he did. His fissure eventually healed. His original diet was high protein, fat, starch and low vegetables.
 7. Post Nasal Drip: One of my customers had postnasal drip. I told her that her diet was too cold (salads, fruits, cold drinks, etc.) causing excess condensation, water to occur, accumulate and leak out her nose. I advised her to increase cooked foods, spices, etc. while reducing cold, damp foods. Her postnasal drip disappeared within days.
 8. Anemia, Blood Deficiency: Several of my female customers, employees were suffering from blood deficiency, anemia (pale skin, diminished periods, weak hair and nails, forgetfulness, etc.). All were vegetarians (low protein, low fat (soft dairy, beans, nuts, etc.) and high carbohydrate (salads, fruits). It took me more than a year to convince them that their diets were anemic that they desperately needed to eat red meat, chicken, eggs, etc. on a regular basis. Once they started eating meat, they immediately felt better
 9. Sinusitis: One of my employees was suffering from sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses). She was vegetarian. Her diet was cold and damp which in turn weakened her spleen producing dampness, excess condensation (mucous, phlegm) in her lungs, throat, sinuses, etc. Excess fluids, mucous tend to obstruct the flow of air and fluids within the lungs, nose, sinuses, causing dryness and inflammation. I recommended the hot middle diet, including spices. Spices are hot and drying. They dry dampness, mucous, phlegm, while also stimulating, increasing blood flow.  Blood is moistening. Inflammation is caused by dryness. Fire (inflammation) burns dry wood not wet wood.
 10. Impotence Over the years, many men have come to see me about their sexual difficulties (inability to achieve or maintain an erection). Almost every one of them was a long-term (20- 30 years) coffee drinker (2-3 cups per day). I advised them to give up coffee, as caffeine tends to drain the kidneys, jing. The few that gave up coffee saw their erections return. I also suffered from impotence. My condition however was caused by anemic diet, as I was a long-term vegetarian (fifteen years), who did not drink coffee. My erections came back once I started eating more protein and fat (red meat, eggs, chicken, turkey, etc.), cooked vegetables and less raw, sweet, sugary foods.
 11. Cold I was visiting a good friend and his wife in Fort Meyers, Fl. where his parents (great people) lived. They had flown in from Seattle where they live. When I got there, he was coughing up a storm, non-stop. He said it was his allergies. I told him it was a cold (he also had a runny nose, stiff shoulders, etc.), and that he needed to eat more hot foods at which time he held up his beer. Alcohol is hot and dry, which made his cough, drier, worse. I went into his mother’s kitchen and made him a spicy hot vegetable soup. I threw in every hot spice that I could find. I made his soup dragon hot. He gobbled the soup down (two bowls) and within twenty minutes, his cough and runny nose had stopped. Before the soup, he had been coughing every ten minutes. Colds in general are very easy to cure if you can treat, heat them in the beginning, onset days one and two.
 12. Anxiety One of my customers (60 years old, vegetarian) was having frequent anxiety attacks. When I counseled her, she was screaming and yelling from one anxiety attack to another. I had to teach her how to deep breathe in order to control her outbursts. I initially thought her condition was caused by excess heat. She had a plethora of heat symptoms and did not seem deficient in any way until I discovered she also had uncontrollable urination, which is a kidney yang, deficiency symptom. Kidney symptoms (Chapter 13) outweigh all other symptoms. Her condition was one of deficiency. Her long-term diet was vegetarian, anemic. She was not building, producing enough blood; therefore she became weak, dry and hot (blood, nutrients build, moisten, cool, etc.). I recommended the hot middle diet (red meat, eggs, cooked vegetables, spices, etc.) which was problem because she was a vegetarian. She would not eat red meat. I finally convinced her by asking her what she would do if it were a matter of life and death. She would not eat red meat but she would eat veal and eggs. Three days later, she called me back. I was a little nervous. I thought I might have given her the wrong diet, too hot as she was sixty years old and living in a very hot climate (FL).I picked up the phone, she asked if this was the genius. All her anxiety attacks had disappeared. She also slept better and had great bowel movements.
 13. Sore lower back I occasionally develop lower back and or upper back pain whenever I eat or drink too many cold foods, drinks: ice cream, tropical fruits, juices, beer, etc. Every time I reduce or eliminate the source of coldness, in addition to increasing spicy foods, the pain goes away.
 14. Neuralgia and other diseases of the foot I met this young woman (professional ice skater); age 26 who came to my store. She could not stay; stand for too long because her feet would hurt.  She had trouble walking and had to use a wheelchair to go through airports. Her condition had started several years prior. She had seen many doctors, orthopedic surgeons, chiropractor, acupuncturists, had blood work, x-rays, MRI, etc. No one was able to diagnose or help. She was blood deficient (long-term low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate diet). I recommended the hotter middle diet, red meat everyday, etc. A year or so later she was able to walk, stand and skate without pain or fear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop, Don’t buy or read another nutritional book before reading this BOOK, July 11, 2009
By  D.L. (Texas) – See all my reviews

Health and disease are simple when you know biology, diet and nutrition and can eat simply, and complicated, diseased and painful when you do not know, cannot or will not eat simply. Concentrated sweets, sugar nourish, cause tooth decay and nerve, root damage, infection. The cessation of sweets, proper diet and certain herbs slows and or arrests tooth decay and infection. Just because something gets worse does not mean it cannot get better

The teeth are nothing more than bone, enamel fed, kept alive by nerves. Blood, nutrients feed, nourish and cleanse the nerves. Pain in the teeth, gums occur when cavity, decay and or infection penetrates into the nerve. It is the infected nerve and not the decayed tooth (enamel, dentin-covered-pulp) that causes pain.

Excess sugar (processed, concentrated) is generally the cause as it tends to nourish certain bacteria that infect the nerves. Abscesses, accumulation of pus caused by the breakdown of tissues, may also occur.

Reduction of sugar, increased flossing, brushing, dental visists (teeth cleaning) and peppermint oil can help prevent and or cure most tooth, nerve infections, depending on severity.

Dental caries (cavities), pain, abscesses, etc. are commonly treated with drilling, fillings, root canals, extractions, antibiotics, etc. which are temporary in nature, unless the diet is adjusted accordingly (serious reduction in sugar).

Most tooth decay, infections of the gums, nerves is caused by poor diet: too much sugar, flour, protein, fat, etc., in addition to poor hygiene, lack of brushing, flossing. Poor diet (sugar, cookies, soda, ice cream, etc.)  keeps the infection alive while correct diet (less sugar, balanced diet) and herbs tends to cure. Concentrated sugars (white, brown, molasses, fructose, candy bars, pastries, ice cream, etc), chocolate, oily, greasy foods and overeating weaken and clog the stomach, small, and large intestines.

In TCM, the meridians of the stomach and large intestine pass through the mouth and gums. Overeating, especially poor quality, sweet foods can easily inflame and bleed the nerves and gums, especially during the night (culmination of daytime activities, diet) and early morning hours. Simple foods: fruit, vegetables, grains, beans, cheese, spices, herbs, etc. fight and or prevent decay, infection. Eat yogurt instead of ice cream. Eat bread and peanut butter (as long as you are not allergic) instead of cookies. Eat fruit and celery, carrot sticks, instead of candy.

Does this mean that you should avoid the dentist and forgo dental work? No. It is wise to see a dentist and get his, her diagnosis as well as cleaning (regular and periodontal).  After that, comes decision time. How much time do you have to heal the infected nerve before it becomes worse. Do you have enough time to experiment clean up your diet to see if makes a difference? Are you willing to suffer pain, as it takes time to heal and you cannot take too much medication, as you need to feel, gauge the pain to see if it is getting better or worse? Getting better usually occurs in stages that may take days or weeks to occur. The healing process is slow but methodical and varies according to the individual. Seek a qualified medical opinion before making any decision.

Case history: In 2003, I was living in Issaquah, WA. In the summer, I used to hike in the mountains, and then go swimming in the river at Twin Falls (fed by mountain water).  Mountain water is incredibly cold, even in the summer. No one can stay in more than twenty minutes. While swimming, I got water in my ears and the next day I developed a severe toothache that infected, inflamed my mouth, right side, upper gums and teeth. I tried to cure it naturally. Nothing worked.

A week later, I went to a dentist. He and his partner were confused as to which tooth, root was decayed, infected, as the x-rays were inconclusive. They tested each tooth many times, but I was so knocked up with medication, that I could only guess, which of the two teeth (they had narrowed it down to two) were infected. They finally settled on one tooth and did a root canal ($1300). They both thought the tooth would ooze blood, pus once they opened it up. Nothing came out, except a few drops of blood.

Next day the pain came back in full. I was able to nullify the pain via acupuncture and herbs: cayenne pepper and peppermint oil. Peppermint oil worked the best (several drops, ten to twenty times per day, swish around the infected tooth, gum).

Over the years the pain, inflammation, looseness, in my gums, teeth came and went. Three years later, it turned into an abscess, a big white pimple on the side of my gums. I would pop the abscess (it would squirt out with force) and the pain would lessen. I also started using an anti-inflammatory (Ibuprofen), four tablets at a time, four times a day to control the pain.

This went on for another couple of years until I discovered that good diet (no candies, sweets, chocolate, alcohol, overeating) in addition to tea tree oil (anti-fungal), peppermint oil (antibacterial), xylitol (antibacterial) toothpaste and daily flossing could control and or eliminate the infection, abscess (as long as I ate well). Once I started eating poorly, too much candy (I could eat a little, occasionally) and or overeating, the infection, pain, loose teeth would automatically come back.

So far, I have been abscess, pain free with no loose teeth ever since. I do have an occasional flare-up. Years later, another tooth, root, nerve on the opposite side became infected (I had x-rays, dental examination and an incredible amount of pain) and I was able to cure via diet, peppermint oil (several drops, 20- 30 times a day) and Ibuprofen. It took four to five weeks to cure (not 100%, occasional pain, depending on diet). Check with your dentist first.

SECTION IV DAILY PRACTICES: Ch 26 The Way of Breathing, Ch. 27 Exercise, Ch 28 Meditation, Ch 29 Spiritual Practices

Abnormal concentration of bile acids, cholesterol and phospholipids in the bile tend to create gallstones (cholelithiasis) in the gall bladder. Seventy-five percent of gallstones are cholesterol stones.

Cholesterol is a byproduct of protein and fat digestion. Building, high protein and high fat nutrients, foods (red meat, pork, veal, wild game, chicken, cheese, pizza, lasagna, French fries, potato chips, oil, etc.), in the extreme, tend to develop stones in the gall bladder and kidneys. This is the major reason why low protein, low fat (dairy, beans, nuts, seeds) and high carbohydrate (grains, vegetables (raw, cooked), fruit) diets are often advised, in addition to bitter herbs and spices (fennel, cumin and coriander) which also help reduce, digest and eliminate excess fat, cholesterol, stones.

All blood passes through the liver. The liver stores, cleanses (removes excess cholesterol, fat, uric acid, posions, toxins, etc.) and releases the blood. Poisons, toxins are transformed into bile (digests fat), cholesterol, lecithin and other substances. Bile emulsifies, digests fat. One pint of bile per day passes into the gall bladder.

The gall bladder (pear shaped, organ 3-4″ in size) is connected to the liver and small intestine. It is a located on right side of the body, behind the liver. The gall bladder stores and releases bile into small intestine (via cystic and bile ducts) that eventually passes into the feces.

High protein, high fat diets, overeating and alcohol increase the likelihood of gallstone formation. When gallstones form, they can stay and collect or move out into a duct. Gallstones that stay can inflame the gall bladder (cholecystitis) causing nausea, fever and or pain in abdomen or behind the breastbone. The urine may become tea or coffee colored. Gallstones that move out into a duct tend to cause nausea, vomiting and or pain in the right side, upper abdomen. These symptoms tend to occur after a fried or fatty meal. Gall bladder attacks mimic the pain of heart attack

The colder middle diet, meal plan (low proten, low fat amd high carbohydrate (cooked, raw) iet) recommended. Folk remedy: Drink 1 tsp each of apple cider vinegar and honey in a glass of apple juice or water several times during the day or drink three TB olive oil in lemon juice right before bedtime, for 1-2 nights to help cure, eliminate gallstones. Lie; sleep on your right side. Check with your doctor and research further before taking any further action.

You catch cold because you are cold. The body is naturally warm. It needs to maintain a certain temperature (98.6), energy production to stay healthy. Below that temperature, the body gets colder, making it environmentally attractive to cold natured diseases, including the common cold and flu. Correct diet maintains the correct temperature, the incorrect, worsens, causes disease via too much or too little energy. Too little energy cools and dampens. Too much overheats and dries.

Temperatures, energy production below 98.6, tend to cool, slow and dampen the body, in the same way, the cold temperatures of winter cool, slow and harden water in the air, into rain, snow and ice. Cold, in excess, via external (winter, air conditioning, living, sleeping in a cold, damp basement) or internal (cold, damp, low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate diet) sources tends to cool and harden water in the lungs (naturally moist), nose throat and sinuses into water, mucous and phlegm obstructing the breath causing coughing, sneezing, sore throat, etc.

Cold temperatures also drain blood from the extremities, head, arms and legs causing them to be cold, weak and shaky. Symptoms define all disease, cause and effect. Respiratory (runny nose, mucous, phlegm, coughing, snoring, sore throat), circulatory (headache, cold hands and feet, shaking, chattering), immune (fever) and or digestive (abdominal bloating, gas, loose stools) symptoms define the common cold and the flu, which is more or less a bad cold (in the extreme, the flu can be fatal). The extreme depends on the individual as colds and flu’s can only attack, infect the unhealthy.

Flu’s are acute, contagious virus caused infection. Viruses like bacteria require a medium to grow. In the lungs (includes throat, nose and sinuses), water is the medium. The lungs are naturally moist. Water facilitates the exchanges of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide), between the blood (lungs) and the environment. Oxygen is water-soluble.

Too much water (mucous, phlegm) in the lungs, tend to weaken and reduce the exchange causing oxygen deprivation (less oxygen is absorbed), fatigue (less oxygen), shortness of breath (mucous), coughing, hacking, sore throat, snoring, sleep apnea and in the extreme, viral and or bacterial infection, turning the common cold into the flu.

All flu’s vary in strength, as does the individual. Not everyone gets sick when “attacked” by a pathogenic virus, as some have better immune systems. The immune system is a function of diet, nutrition, exercise and circulation. Protein and fat build and fuel. Low protein, low fat foods (milk, yogurt, soft cheeses, beans, nuts and seeds) in the extreme, tend to thin, weaken and cool all structure and function, including the immune system. High carbohydrate, cold, damp foods and drinks (milk, yogurt, ice cream, salads, tropical fruits, juices, smoothies, cold drinks), in the extreme, tend to dilute and weaken digestion reducing nutrient absorption, blood, energy, while increasing cold and damp, especially in the lungs.

The lungs lie directly above the digestive organs. Digestion, three meals a day, produces excess energy, heat that naturally rises into the lungs, heating and drying. Weak digestion cools, dampens and weakens the body, lungs, nose throat, etc. in addition to abdominal bloating, gas, loose stools, etc. Digestive symptoms are the key factor in determining whether the cause is internal or external. An external attack initially does not produce any digestive disturbances.

Strong digestion acts a cold and flu preventative as it energizes heats and dries the body, lungs. It is fueled by protein and fat. Eggs, chicken, turkey, fish and hard cheese contain more protein and fat than soft dairy, beans, nuts and seeds. Spices (cardamom, cumin, coriander, fennel, cayenne, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, etc.) increase digestion, heat, dry dampness and are antibacterial and anti fungal. Women and children (under-developed) tend to be cold, damp, deficient.

The body generally produces a fever when it overheats and or catches cold, becomes infected. Fever, extreme heat via a sudden increase in body temperature (via protein, fat, cooked foods, soups, spices, hot baths, exercise, etc.) heats, dries excess cold, damp in addition to killing certain bacteria and viruses. Athletes and the active in general, due to increased physical activity, circulation, better diet, etc. tend to catch fewer colds. They also heal faster.

Spices (use several at a time in cooking) heat the body, dry damp and are antibacterial and antiviral. Peppermint tea helps counter dry, sore throats, mucous, coughing and smoking. The treatment plan, in addition to seeing a doctor is heat: hot soups, spicy foods, protein, fat, extra clothing, hot baths, sweating, etc. while reducing all cold foods: dairy, cold drinks, tropical fruits, juices, raw vegetables, salads, bitter herbs, etc. Vitamin C, golden seal and echinacea are also effective in curing the common cold, when taken at the onset (day one or two).

The swine flu on average kills 33,000 people per year. That is 33,000 out of 333,000,000 (estimated population of America). One of every thousand people, young and old die every year from the flu.  I have not gotten a swine flu or any flu shot in the last thirty five years, but I also eat well, most of the time.

The kidneys are located on the rear wall of the abdomen in the small of the back on either side of the vertebral column and have many different functions. The meridians (energetic pathways) of the kidneys pass into the ears.

The kidneys store jing (sexual essence, DNA). Jing is the fundamental, material substance of life governing birth, growth, development and reproduction It is stored in the left kidney as kidney yin and transformed by the right kidney (kidney yang, gate of fire) into the marrow, bones, brain, spinal chord, sex organs, head hair, teeth (excess of bones) and original chi (stimulus of all organ function). Jing also governs will power. The amount of jing is fixed at birth, and starts to decline after sexual maturity. It is the fountain of youth when full, and the harbinger of old age, disease when less, declining. Protein and fat build and fuel jing.

The kidneys regulate electrolytes (positive and negative ions), pH, acid and alkaline balance. The pH scale ranges from 1 – 14. A pH of seven is neutral. Below seven is acid, above, alkaline. Normal body, blood pH is approximately 7.3. Anything above (alkalosis) or below (acidosis), in the extreme sickens.

The kidneys filter the blood removing and combining nitrogenous (protein and fat) wastes, urea with water into urine, sent down via ureters to the urinary bladder for temporary storage and eventual excretion via the urethra. The kidneys control the urinary bladder, urination and elimination.

The kidneys are a function of diet, lifestyle. Too much or too little protein and fat, excessive sex, caffeine, coldness, immobility, sedentary lifestyle, excessive sitting, lying down, and or chronic illness tend to weaken the kidneys, bones, sex organs, etc. Protein and fat build and fuel blood, jing kidneys, etc.

Low protein and low fat diets, in the extreme, tend to thin and weaken the blood, which in turn, thins and weakens jing, hair, teeth, bones, etc. Too much protein, fat, in addition to alcohol, smoking and caffeine also accelerates the consumption of jing.

Excessive sex, masturbation (daily), caffeine, alcohol, smoking, stimulant drugs, bulimia, overwork, heredity and or living in an excessively hot, dry climate increase, accelerate consumption, burning of jing. When jing declines, the aging, drying, thinning and weakening process begins. You can live fast, die young or slow down, conserve jing and live longer.

Excessive sex, masturbation is especially weakening for men. Orgasm, ejaculation produces a great loss of energy via a loss of essence, jing (contains large amounts of protein and fat) generally causing a loss of consciousness after orgasm. Eastern philosophies advise the man to start but not finish (ejaculate, orgasm) to not only conserves jing but also extend lovemaking. Give up the small (orgasm) for the greater (longer lovemaking, healthier life). The less you ejaculate the stronger and longer you live, which is why many spiritual disciplines advocate celibacy. Celibacy also allows one to direct energy inward, upward into the higher chakras, spiritual energy centers, instead of down and out the lower chakras. For more information please read Chapters 28 (Meditation) and 29 (Spiritual Practices).

Kidney pathologies are defined in terms of yin and yang. Kidney yin (jing) builds and moistens all yin (liver yin, heart yin, lung yin, etc), while also building and fueling kidney yang (fire). Kidney yang fuels all yang, function (digestion, respiration, circulation, reproduction, etc.) and automatically declines, becomes deficient when kidney yin, jing declines. Kidney yin and yang are never in excess, only deficient, as jing naturally declines with age, after sexual maturity (varies according to the individual). Kidney pathologies, in general are stage 6 or higher. The following are symptoms of kidney yin deficiency.

Kidney yin deficiency Stage One

1. Dry mouth at night Long-term kidney yin deficiency, blood, protein and fat deficiency and or excessive heat (too much protein, fat, alcohol, caffeine and smoking), tends to cause heat, dryness, especially in the extremities, head, arms and legs, during the evening and or periods of inactivity. Dry mouth and throat, during the night is a cardinal kidney yin deficiency symptom

2. Night sweats Deficient yin (jing, blood) fails to control0 cool and moisten yang, fire, causing the body to temporarily overheat, perspire during the night.

 3. Malar flush is partial facial flushing. Kidney yin, jing deficiency cannot fully control, contain energy, fire causing it occasionally rage, flash out of control producing partial (deficient) flushing as opposed to total flushing (entire face red). Excess heat (too much building) causes excess heat. Deficient heat causes deficient, temporary heat.

4. Insomnia (light and dreamy) The shen, spirit sleeps in the heart (blood rich organ anchors, holds the spirit). Kidney yin, blood, protein, fat, jing deficiency tends to weaken and dry the heart (in addition to everything else) while overheating the body, causing the spirit to rise up into the head, brain, stimulating thinking, dreaming.

5. Urinary difficulties Kidney yang heats the bladder, thinning its fluids making them easier to pass. When jing declines, kidney yang, fire also declines increasing and thickening water in the bladder making it more difficult and painful to pass. Yin fuels yang.

Stage Two. Chronic kidney yin deficiency

6. Dry skin, nails, hair, eyes, secretions, etc Long-term kidney yin (jing, blood) deficiency dries the skin, hair, nails, etc.

7. Mental problems (poor concentration, loss of memory, etc) Long-term jing, blood deficiency thins and weakens the marrow, brain. Dizziness, vertigo

8. Restlessness and or irritability Yin deficiency tends to cause deficient heat, over stimulation of the brain. Yang (fire, energy) no matter how weak is always moving. Energy moves. Its movement is temporary and not long lasting as the cause is deficiency. Excessive restlessness would require excessive energy, fuel, high protein, high fat, spices, coffee, smoking, etc.

9. Dizziness and vertigo Severe blood, jing deficiency, poor circulation and or sudden excess heat via diet (caffeine, alcohol, smoking, etc.) or climate (hot, dry) tends to dry and weaken the brain causing it and the body to become dizzy, lose consciousness, control temporarily, causing the body to sway, like fire. 10. Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) The kidneys open up into the ears. Kidney yin deficiency tends to create a soft ringing as opposed to a loud ringing, generally a symptom of excess heat in the liver.

11. Weak bones and teeth Jing is the material foundation of the bones, teeth and hair.

12. Nocturnal emissions The kidneys control the sexual organs.. Deficient kidney yin weakens, lessens kidney yang, holding power, causing leaking during the night (nocturnal emissions).

Kidney yang heats, stimulates, supplements all function, yang: digestion (spleen), respiration (anchors the breath, inhalation), elimination (bladder, orifices of elimination), circulation (heart) and reproduction (transforms jing into ovum, sperm). Jing, blood deficiency, old age, poor diet, excessive sex, alcohol, caffeine, drugs and kidneys yin deficiency drains, weakens kidney yang. Kidney yin, jing fuels kidney yang.

Kidney yang deficiency Stage One

1. Coldness in the back and knees Kidney yang warms the bones, back, knees.

2. Sore, weak lower back The kidneys are located in the lower back. Kidney yang (chi) holds the bones in place. Deficient kidney yang causes pain, weakness and coldness in the lower back. Cardinal symptom

3. Abundant, clear urination Kidney yang heats the bladder, thins the urine. Weak kidney yang cools the bladder increasing water, urine and the need to urinate.0

Stage Two

4. Bright, white complexion Kidney yang supplements heart and lung yang. Chronic deficient kidney yang weakens the lungs, heart, reducing circulation, blood flow to the head, face producing a bright, white complexion (cold). Blood is red (hot).

5. Shortness of breath Kidney yang anchors (pulls in) the breath, Chronic kidney yang deficiency weakens, decreases the inhalation.

6. Weak legs The kidneys rule the bones, legs

7. Loose stools at daybreak Deficient kidney yang weakens digestion, spleen yang, fire.

8. Premature ejaculation Kidney yang (chi) holds. Deficient kidney yang tends to cause premature ejaculation (lack of holding).

9. Impotence Kidney yang moves and holds blood in the penis. Deficient kidney yang causes impotence.

10. Chronic vaginal discharge Kidney yang heats the body. Weak kidney yang cools, moistens and thickens fluids in the uterus, vagina into clear or white mucous discharges.

11. Edema in the legs and ankles Kidney yang controls water metabolism. Water increases, and tends to overflow into the legs and ankles when kidney yang is weak.

12. Prolapse of the uterus  Kidney yang supports spleen yang, holding. Chronic kidney yang deficiency weakens spleen yang, holding causing the uterus to sink, prolapse.

13. Infertility in women Kidney yang transforms jing into ovum, moves the egg (ovum) through the ovaries and fallopian tubes into the uterus. Kidney yin deficiency decreases transformation, movement of the egg, fertility.

14. Tongue is pale, swollen and wet. Kidney yang heats the body, dries excess fluids and supports heart yang, circulation. Deficient kidney yang burns less fluids and moves less blood causing the tongue to become pale (blood is red), cold, swollen and wet.

The kidneys, jing are nourished by blood, protein and fat (especially red meat), black foods (black beans, black fungus, black sesame seeds, black dates, rhemannia, etc.) and warmth (protein, fat, cooked foods, etc.). Cold temperatures (winter, air condition, swimming in cold water, etc.), cold drinks (juices, sodas, ice water) in excess, tends to chill, shock and weaken the kidneys. This is one reason why in some cultures women wrap, insulate their midsection, lower abdomen with an extra layer of clothing, to keep cold out, while heat, energy in. It is also the reason why most foods are cooked, to not only aid digestion, but also increase body heat. This does not mean that vegetables should be overcooked, soft, mushy just cooked, lightly steamed, boiled, crunchy.

The liver  (large, thick, blood rich organ) is located on the upper right side of the body, abdomen behind the lower right rib cage. All blood passes through the liver. The liver stores, cleanses (removes excess protein, fat, cholesterol, impurities) and releases the blood. It also produces bile (fat emulsifier, digestive agent, which is stored in the gall bladder (connected to liver) and later released via bile ducts into the small intestine. The liver, known as the general in traditional Chinese medicine commands the troops, blood.

The liver filters, removes and transforms excess protein and fat (lipids) into cholesterol and lipoproteins: high-density lipoproteins (HDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL). Lipoproteins regulate cholesterol. LDL and VLDL carry and harden cholesterol in plaque that binds to the walls of the arteries. HDL removes and transports cholesterol from the bloodstream to the liver, where it is broken down, transformed into bile salts eventually eliminated through the bowels.

Saturated fat, commonly found in meat, eggs, cheese, etc. increases the number of LDL and VLDL. Unsaturated fatty acids commonly found in beans, nuts and seeds, increase the number of HDL. The balance of health favors an excess, of HDL. A certain amount of saturated fat, LDL and VLDL are required. Life is a balance of opposites. You need both to exist. Too much fat, cholesterol in the liver tends to thicken, clog and overheat the liver producing various overbuilt, yang (heat) rising pathologies (TCM).

Protein and fat (includes cholesterol) are thick, sticky, hard nutrients. In excess (stage 1), they tend to thicken, clog the blood (stage 4) before thickening, clogging and weakening the liver (stage 5). Less cholesterol, fat are removed more stays in the bloodstream (high cholesterol) and arteries (plaque, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure). More blood flows into the liver (clogged, swollen) than out, disrupting and reducing overall circulation, blood, especially to the extremities: head, arms and legs, producing a variety of chi (energy) and quasi blood deficiency symptoms (pain, dryness, inflammation, weakness, shaking, etc.)

Overbuilt liver    Excess heat
Dietary tendencies Symptoms, diseases
Overbuilt, acidic diet Liver yang rising, pitta
High protein, high fatEggs, red meat, wild game, veal, chicken, turkey, fish, cheese, pizza, lasagna, French fries, potato chips, oilHigh starchBread, pastriesAlcohol, coffee, smoking

Low  fruit and vegetables

Swelling, congestion, high cholesterol,  high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, red face, eyes, chest, rib distention, dysmenorrhea, sweaty hands, feet, arthritis, insomnia, tinnitus (loud), psoriasis, migraine, anger, impatience,    violence

Stage Five. Liver chi and blood stagnation
1. Moodiness and irritability Too much protein and fat tends to overbuild, thicken and clog the liver, blood,  arteries, etc. stagnating and reducing the circulation of blood, drying, tensing and frustrating the body mind causing moodiness and irritability (excess, trapped energy).
2. Sighing is the body, lung’s attempt to release trapped energy (chi) and blood within the liver. The lungs (right lung sits atop the liver) expand and contract, which in turn massages, moves blood in and out of the liver.
3. Chest, rib and breast distention and plum pit (imaginary lump in throat, difficulty swallowing). Too much protein and fat tend to congest and swell the liver (located on the right side of the body, behind the rib cage beneath the lungs), causing it to press up against the ribs, abdomen, chest, breasts and throat (plum pit syndrome).
4. Menstrual irregularities The liver stores, cleanses and releases the blood, into the body, uterus. Liver congestion via thick blood, high protein, high fat and or too much alcohol, thickens, distorts and reduces blood flow to the uterus causing PMS, dark, clotted menstrual blood, dysmenorrhea (painful or irregular periods), etc.

  Stage Six. Liver blood heat
5. Red face and red eyes Liver blood nourishes the eyes. Mild to long-term liver congestion, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure tends to overheat the blood, body, Heat rises, reddening the head, face and eyes.
6. Anger with outbursts, shouting Long-term liver congestion, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, etc. reduces circulation, while increasing internal, heat, energy, pressurize until some sort of release occurs. This release can come in the form of rapid breathing or perspiration via exercise or an emotional, angry outburst, explosion of excess, trapped energy. Smaller meals, fasting, open spaces, slow moving exercises (tai chi, chi gung, yoga, etc.) and meditation help dissipate excess energy, anger.   Anger, in general, is a reaction, judgment to an unfulfilled desire. Everyone chooses to react, differently.  Think and be positive.
7. Dream disturbed sleep Long-term liver congestion, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, etc. tends to overheat the blood, body, heart, brain during the night, stimulating thinking, dreaming and in the extreme, wakefulness. Sleeping is a cooling, calming activity.
8. Bitter taste in the mouth. The liver produces bile (bitter) and is stored in the gall bladder prior to its release into the small intestine. Overeating, too much protein and fat tends to over stimulate the liver, bile production in addition to clogging the stomach and small intestine, causing a backflow (rebellion) of stomach energy, food, bile, etc. that rises up into the throat causing burping, nausea, vomiting, acid regurgitation, bile, bitter taste.
9. Tongue has red body (sides) and a dry yellow coating The sides represent the liver and gall bladder. Liver, gallbladder heat tends to dry, redden and or yellow the tongue’s coating.

Stage 7. Extreme liver blood heat
10. Epitasis (nosebleeds) Long-term liver congestion reduces blood flow to the extremities, head, damaging, drying, thinning, cracking or bleeding the vessels, capillaries in the nose.
11. Tinnitus (loud ringing) Long-term liver congestion, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure increase pressure, loud ringing sound in the head, ears. Soft ringing indicates kidney yin deficiency.
12. Severe insomnia Long-term liver congestion, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, etc. in addition to late or large dinners (protein and fat), caffeine, smoking, alcohol, etc. increase energy, heat and pressure, making it difficult to sleep. The mind and body cannot rest when the body is overheated. Eat more vegetables and fruits.
13. Skin problems (acne, psoriasis, scratching, etc) Too much protein and fat, thicken, clog and heat the liver, blood, skin (thick, red, irritated and or oozing pus). Too little and or dampness weakens the skin (acne,  eczema).
14. Hypertension (high blood pressure) Too much protein and fat tends to clog and weaken the liver increasing cholesterol, plaque (atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis), which in turn, increases pressure.
15. Metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding between periods) and menorrhagia (abnormally long or heavy menses) tend to be caused by cervical cancer, uterine tumors, high protein, high fat diets.
16. Aggression or domineering attitude Too much protein and fat, especially animal, tends to overbuild, over fuel, and overheat the liver, body producing aggression, domineering attitude, violence, derangement, etc. A healthy, flexible, unclogged liver, in general, produces strength, leadership, compassion and motivation.
17. Pain beneath the right side of the rib cage Too much protein and fat not only swells the liver, but also increase bile production, which in turn, swells and inflames the gall bladder causing pain beneath the right rib cage (area of the liver and gall bladder).

The liver removes poisons, toxins from the blood and transforms them into bile (digestive agent), cholesterol, lecithin and other substances. One pint of bile per day passes into the gall bladder (pear shaped 3-4″ organ connected to and lying beneath the liver) and is later released into small intestine (via cystic and bile ducts), eventually passing through the feces. Abnormal concentration of bile acids, cholesterol and phospholipids in the bile tend to create gallstones that can move into the bile ducts causing inflammation, nausea, vomiting, fever and or pain in the right upper abdomen or behind the breastbone.

Gall bladder attacks (mimic pain of heart attack).tend to occur after fried or fatty meals. The urine may become tea or coffee colored. Seventy-five percent of gallstones are cholesterol stones. Cholesterol is a byproduct of protein and fat digestion. Too much protein, fat, especially animal, fried foods, etc. tends to produce gall bladder and kidneys stones.

Stage Eight. Excess heat in the gall bladder
18. Jaundice (yellow pigmentation of the skin). Too much bile (yellow), cholesterol, phospholipids tend to create stones in the gall bladder, ducts, and in the extreme, cause leaking, overflow of bile into the skin, eyes, etc.
19. Gall stones Radishes and or apple cider vinegar (one TB diluted in one glass of water, three times per day) may help dissolve gallstones, in addition to low protein, low fat and high carbohydrate diet.

The colder middle diet, meal plan is recommended for all overbuilt (high protein, high fat) conditions. Small breakfast (vegetarian or toast and tea), big lunch (protein, fat) and or small dinner (vegetarian) is generally beneficial, as is fasting (on fruit juice) one day a week Avoid overeating. Drink water to retard appetite. Common supplements like fish liver oil may aggravate a swollen liver and cause headaches. Most liver problems require patience and discipline as it takes months, years (of good daily diet) to heal replace diseased tissue with new healthy tissues. Impatience and anger overheat, tighten and tense the liver. There are no quick cures

Blood, protein and fat deficiency can also attack and weaken the liver. Dry nails, eyes, tendons and ligaments, and amenorrhea (little or no period) are symptoms of liver blood deficiency. Liver blood nourishes the nails, eyes, tendons, ligaments and uterus. Blood, protein and fat deficiency is time consuming (120 days to rebuild blood) but generally easy to cure as the diet can easily be adjusted.
